A driver is dead and three others were hospitalized following a violent overnight crash near 43rd Avenue and Cactus Road in north Phoenix.

According to Phoenix Police, the crash happened just after midnight when a driver allegedly ran a red light and collided with another vehicle.

The driver accused of running the red light was pronounced dead at the scene. Three people inside the second vehicle were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.

The impact left a major debris field across the roadway. One of the vehicles appeared to strike a traffic pole, knocking it down, and debris — including what appeared to be an engine — was scattered throughout the intersection.

Investigators are now working to determine whether impairment may have played a role in the crash.

The intersection remained closed for several hours while police investigated and crews cleared the scene. It reopened around 6 a.m.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to everyone affected by this tragic crash.
